American R&B star Ne-Yo is returning to Nairobi for the first time in 11 years, giving Kenyan fans another chance to experience the music that helped define the genre in the 2000s.

The three-time Grammy Award winner will headline One Night Only: Brunch Edition at Ulinzi Sports Complex on October 20, during the Mashujaa Day holiday. The event is scheduled to run from 3pm to 11pm.

The performance marks a return to Kenya for the singer, songwriter and producer, who last visited the country in 2015 for Coke Studio Africa. This time, he will take centre stage as the main attraction.

From Coke Studio to a Nairobi Headline Show

Ne-Yo, whose real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith, first visited Kenya during the third season of Coke Studio Africa. The music programme brought together artists from across the continent for collaborations that blended different genres and musical traditions.

During his visit, he worked with Kenyan rapper Wangechi, Tanzania’s Ali Kiba, Uganda’s Maurice Kirya, Nigeria’s Ice Prince and Mozambique’s Dama Do Bling.

His time in East Africa also led to a collaboration with Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz. The pair recorded Marry You, which was released in 2017 with a music video filmed in Los Angeles and Johannesburg.

More than a decade later, Ne-Yo is returning to a music scene that has continued to evolve. His upcoming performance offers fans an opportunity to revisit the songs that first introduced many of them to his music.

The Hits That Made Ne-Yo a Global Star

Ne-Yo rose to international fame with songs that combined smooth vocals, memorable melodies and relationship-centred lyrics.

His best-known tracks include So Sick, Closer, Miss Independent, Because of You, Sexy Love and Mad. Many remain familiar to listeners who grew up with 2000s R&B.

His influence also extends beyond his own recordings. Ne-Yo has songwriting credits on Beyoncé’s Irreplaceable and has written songs for artists including Rihanna, Usher, Celine Dion and Jennifer Hudson.

That work has established him as both a recording artist and a songwriter behind some of the era’s best-known pop and R&B releases.

For Kenyan fans, his return is an opportunity to hear the music live rather than through radio playlists and streaming platforms.

Tickets, Performers and What Fans Can Expect

The Nairobi event is being promoted as a brunch-style experience rather than a conventional evening concert. UK showband Sol & The Gang is also scheduled to perform, adding a live-band element to the programme.

According to the event details provided, tickets are priced at Sh15,000 for Gold, Sh20,000 for Gold Couple and Sh40,000 for Platinum. Premium tables are also available, although their prices were not specified in the supplied information.

The Nairobi show forms part of Ne-Yo’s African tour, which includes a performance in South Africa before his Kenyan appearance.

His return comes 11 years after his Coke Studio Africa debut, when his collaborations connected him with musicians and audiences across the continent. This time, the focus will be on his own catalogue and the songs that have kept him a fixture in global R&B.

For fans who remember his first Kenyan visit, October 20 offers a chance to welcome him back. For others, it will be an opportunity to see the Grammy-winning artist perform in Nairobi for the first time.
