Central Ukraine was rocked overnight by a series of Russian strikes that killed one person and left extensive damage in their wake, officials said Sunday.
The industrial Dnipropetrovsk region bore the brunt of the assault. Drones, artillery, and rocket launchers struck key areas, destroying buildings and cutting power lines.
“The invaders struck Synelnykivsky district with a guided aerial bomb. A man was killed. Our sincere condolences to his family,” said Mykola Lukashuk, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional council.
In addition to the fatality, five private homes and a kindergarten were damaged, Lukashuk added. Nearby in Nikopol district, a business and four houses suffered damage, along with local power infrastructure.
The attack follows recent Russian bombardments of military training centres in the region that killed 12 Ukrainian soldiers. Moscow has intensified its offensive after peace talks in Istanbul collapsed earlier this month.
The negotiations had sought to end the nearly three-year conflict but resulted only in plans for a large-scale prisoner exchange. The swap, which would see over 1,000 captives released by each side, was scheduled for this weekend but has since stalled.
Russia accused Kyiv of refusing to agree on a date for the exchange. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials have accused Moscow of “playing dirty games” by failing to meet agreed conditions.
Both sides continue to blame each other for the deadlock, while the conflict grinds on.
As fighting escalates, civilians in regions like Dnipropetrovsk bear the brunt of the violence. The destruction of homes and essential services compounds an already dire humanitarian situation.
