NYANDARUA, Kenya — The quiet stillness of Vatican Village in Ol Kalou was shattered Monday evening after residents discovered the body of a well-known egg vendor and mother of three lying lifeless in her home.
The woman, identified by locals only as Moureen, was found with her throat slit, sparking grief, fear, and outrage in the close-knit community. Police have confirmed a homicide investigation is underway, though no arrests have been made.
Daniel Gitau, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for the area, told reporters he rushed to the scene after neighbours raised the alarm.
“We got distress calls from Vatican Village. When we arrived, it was clear the woman had been killed. Her throat had been cut,” said Gitau, visibly shaken by the brutality of the act.
Nyandarua County Police Commander Stella Cherono confirmed officers are treating the case as murder and are actively following leads. She appealed for patience and cooperation from the public.
“We understand the community’s pain,” Cherono said. “Our detectives are on the case. We urge anyone with information to come forward.”
But not everyone is reassured.
Betty Muchina, a human rights advocate and long-time Nyandarua resident, criticised authorities for what she called a “pattern of slow responses” in crimes against women in the county.
“These cases are no longer isolated,” she said. “Femicide in Nyandarua is not rare. What’s rare is swift justice. Families suffer in silence while cases drag on.”
The victim’s body was taken to JM Kariuki Memorial Hospital Mortuary as police continued to gather evidence at the scene.
Neighbours say Moureen was a familiar face in the area, often seen selling eggs along the village paths to support her three young children. Now, a family has been shattered, and a community is left seeking answers.
“This is not just about one woman,” Muchina added. “It’s about all the women who live in fear and all the families waiting for justice.”
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the police or local leaders. As the investigation unfolds, residents are hoping this case will not be just another statistic.
