ODM vows to defend Ruto as governor Wanga urges unity in new political pact

HOMA BAY -In a public show of unity, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has said the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will defend President William Ruto and support his government’s agenda under a growing political alliance between the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition and opposition leaders.

Speaking at a community gathering in Pala Koguta, Ndhiwa Constituency, Governor Wanga told residents the party stood fully behind the memorandum of understanding signed earlier this year with Ruto’s administration.

“We are supporting the President and the programmes his government is implementing,” said Ms Wanga. “We know results may take time, but we are already seeing improvements in healthcare, and more will follow.”

Wanga, who chairs ODM nationally, also addressed scepticism over the government’s controversial Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme. She acknowledged early challenges but remained optimistic. “There have been teething problems,” she admitted, “but the programme is gaining traction. Soon, it will improve access to healthcare for our people.”

The alliance between Ruto and ODM party leader Raila Odinga has reshaped the political landscape, especially in Nyanza, where ODM commands strong support. Wanga warned critics not to misinterpret the party’s cooperation as a sign of weakness, saying loyalty to Raila Odinga remains unwavering.

“If you insult Baba, you insult all of us,” she said, using the popular nickname for Mr Odinga. “But because we are now part of a broad-based government, we will also protect the President and advocate for his work.”

Her remarks appeared aimed at calming tensions within ODM’s base, where some supporters have questioned the wisdom of aligning with Ruto, a long-time rival of Odinga. But Wanga insisted the deal was in the public’s best interest and called for patience as the benefits unfold.

The governor also used the occasion to drum up support for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, which Homa Bay will host for the first time on 1 June.

“It’s a big honour,” she said. “We’re inviting the whole country. Our people are known for their hospitality, and we’re ready to welcome everyone.”

With national celebrations on the horizon and political lines shifting, Wanga’s message was clear: ODM’s leadership believes working with the government is the path to tangible progress and it won’t allow internal or external voices to derail that course.
