Kwale governor distributes 530 Galla goats to boost livelihoods

Kwale — Governor Fatuma Achani has launched a bold push to strengthen livelihoods in Kwale County’s driest areas by distributing 530 Galla goats across 11 wards. The hardy breed is well-suited to the region’s tough climate and promises to boost food security and incomes.

The programme targets the semi-arid subcounties of Kinango and LungaLunga, where residents have long battled drought and poor livestock productivity. Over the past two years, the county government has handed out more than 5,000 Galla goats, with nearly 1,000 more distributed just in the past month.

Speaking to residents in Ndavaya, Governor Achani stressed the importance of resilient livestock for the area. “These Galla goats can endure harsh weather conditions. They will also help improve our local breeds, raising both meat and milk production for livestock keepers across Kwale,” she said.

Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo echoed the governor’s enthusiasm during a recent distribution in Macknon and Samburu Chengon wards. “Our governor’s efforts are transforming lives. In a few years, the improved breeds will replace local ones, bringing better income through increased yields,” he said.

Among the beneficiaries is Rocky Kamanza, who praised the initiative. “The government is delivering on its promises. Galla goats fetch better prices in the market, which will help improve our livelihoods,” Kamanza said.

The wards receiving the goats include Ndavaya, Puma, Samburu/Chengoni, Mackinnon Road, Mwavumbo, Kasemeni, Mwereni, Mkongani, Tsimba/Golini, Dzombo, Gombato Bongwe, Ukunda, and Kinondo.

The distribution is part of a joint effort between the Kwale County Government, the National Government, and the World Bank. It forms part of the KEMFSED and Floca projects aimed at promoting climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable livestock farming in Kenya’s vulnerable regions.

As climate pressures mount, such initiatives offer a vital lifeline for communities where traditional farming and herding have become increasingly challenging. Governor Achani’s programme seeks not just to improve immediate livelihoods but to build lasting resilience across Kwale County.
