NAIROBI — Kevin Bahati, one of Kenya’s most talked-about musicians, has been hospitalised following an unexpected illness. The singer, 33, shared the news late Tuesday in a heartfelt Instagram post, telling his 3.2 million followers that he is stepping away from social media to focus on recovery.
In the photo that accompanied the announcement, Bahati lies on a hospital bed, dressed in a casual Arsenal shirt and jeans. His face is partly hidden behind his hand, hinting at pain or exhaustion. What stood out most was his caption:
“For 33 years I have never laid in a hospital bed but this evening I have found myself in one. Taking a social media break as I pray for a quick recovery,” he wrote.
Bahati didn’t disclose what caused his hospital visit, choosing instead to keep details of his illness private. The post quickly drew attention online, with many fans expressing shock and sending prayers.
“He’s always so full of energy”
The singer, known for both his gospel and secular hits, has been especially active online in recent months—often sharing family moments with wife Diana Marua and their children, as well as engaging in light-hearted online drama.
His absence from social media comes as a surprise to many who are used to his frequent posts.
“I couldn’t believe it at first,” said Mwende K., a long-time fan from Nairobi. “He’s always so full of energy. We just hope he recovers quickly.”
Jokes and prayers flood in
Reactions have poured in from fans and celebrities alike. Some took a lighthearted approach.
“Quick recovery bro… umeona betting sio mchezo, inapandisha presha,” joked one Instagram user, referring to Bahati’s choice of football club.
Comedian Terence Creative joined in, teasing: “Utaskia mtu akisema kuna ngoma mpya anatoa inaitwa Pona.” (Translation: “Watch someone say he’s dropping a new track called Pona—‘Heal’.”)
Still, the tone across much of the comment section was one of concern.
“We’re praying for you, Bahati,” wrote fellow artist Size 8. “Get well soon.”
No timeline for return
Bahati hasn’t said how long he’ll be away from the public eye. But his fans, though worried, have taken comfort in his message.
For now, the singer is choosing silence and rest over the usual online buzz. In Kenya’s entertainment circles—where he remains a major voice—his absence will surely be felt.
As one fan simply put it: “Take your time, Bahati. We’ll be right here when you come back.”
