Kenya opens new embassy in Morocco to boost ties, trade and diplomacy

RABAT, MoroccoKenya has opened a new chapter in its foreign relations, formally inaugurating an embassy in Rabat, the capital of Morocco a move aimed at strengthening political and economic ties with North Africa.

Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, led the ceremony alongside Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The two leaders hailed the occasion as a turning point in a relationship that has quietly spanned nearly six decades.

“This embassy stands as a symbol of our shared aspirations, bound by history, mutual respect and growing cooperation,” Mr Mudavadi said during the event.

The embassy is expected to serve as a key platform for strengthening diplomatic channels, promoting Kenyan business interests in the region, and offering consular support for citizens.

Kenya and Morocco first established formal diplomatic relations in 1965. But until now, Nairobi had no permanent diplomatic mission in the country. The move is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to expand its footprint across Africa and beyond.

In recent years, the two countries have shown a growing interest in working together on issues ranging from education to trade and regional stability. According to officials at Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new embassy will help to “deepen people-to-people connections” and boost economic opportunities for both nations.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mr Bourita welcomed Kenya’s increased presence in the region, noting that Morocco was keen to enhance cooperation across sectors, including agriculture, tourism and security.

The embassy, Kenyan officials say, will also play a role in supporting regional peace efforts and engaging with multilateral organisations in the Maghreb.

While the details of new trade agreements or bilateral projects were not immediately disclosed, Mr Mudavadi hinted at further announcements to come.

“This is not just a building. It is the start of something bigger,” he said. “Kenya is ready to work closely with Morocco for the benefit of our people.”

The opening of the Rabat embassy adds to Kenya’s growing diplomatic presence on the continent, part of a broader vision under President William Ruto’s administration to deepen African partnerships and open up new economic corridors.
