Nairobi, Kenya — Kajiado West Member of Parliament George Sunkuyia has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over claims he forged his secondary school certificate.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmaker was taken into custody Tuesday morning and is being processed at the EACC’s Integrity Centre in Nairobi. He is expected to appear in court later today.
According to EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, the investigation centres on a falsified Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) document, which the MP is alleged to have submitted.
“The issue of fake certificates is widespread, especially in public offices,” Ngumbi said. “Right now, we are looking into 172 similar cases across the country.”
The EACC has recently intensified efforts to tackle fraud in education credentials, especially among senior government officials. The agency says such forgeries undermine public trust and the credibility of Kenya’s education system.
Sunkuyia’s arrest is the latest in a string of similar cases. Earlier this year, Juja MP George Koimburi was charged with presenting forged academic documents. He denied the charges and was released on bail.
The commission has urged all public bodies to step up verification processes for certificates, warning that anyone found with fake documents will face prosecution.
By the time of publishing, neither Sunkuyia nor his legal team had publicly commented on the charges. The case will now move to court, where the MP will be formally charged.
This is a developing story. Updates will follow.
