The Kenyan entertainment industry is mourning the loss of talented actress Winnie Bwire Ndubi, widely known for her role as Dida in the popular Sultana TV show.
Bwire passed away while undergoing treatment for cancer in Turkey, leaving behind a legacy of strength, resilience, and unforgettable performances on screen.
Winnie Bwire had been battling metastatic breast cancer for two years, a journey that was physically, emotionally and financially taxing.
“It is with a heavy heart and humble acceptance that we announce the passing of Winfred Bwire Ndubi. She lost her battle to cancer while undergoing treatment in Turkey. We are grateful for your overwhelming support, prayers, and generosity,” The family confirmed her passing on Thursday morning through a heartfelt statement
Bwire’s journey with cancer had been a public one, marked by her courageous fight against the disease and her appeal for financial assistance to seek specialized treatment abroad.
In December 2023, Bwire publicly reached out for help, needing Ksh.7 million to cover the costs of treatment. Her plea resonated with many, as she spoke of the unpredictability of life and the suddenness with which her health took a turn.
In her public appeal, Bwire opened up about the challenges she faced as she fought cancer. She described the financial burden her family had borne, using all their available resources to pay for her medical bills.
Despite the significant costs, Bwire remained hopeful, making an emotional appeal to well-wishers to assist her in her time of need.
“If you can support me, I have nothing to give in return, but you will save my life. I didn’t want this video to be emotional; I wanted it to be filled with hope,” Bwire said in a video shared on her social media platforms in August 2023, which would turn out to be her last public message.
In the video, Bwire spoke candidly about her treatment journey, explaining that although she had initially responded well to treatment, she began experiencing severe side effects that worsened her condition.
Her battle was tough, and the cost of continuing her treatment became insurmountable without additional financial aid. She had been seeking Ksh.5 million to continue her treatment, covering medical expenses, accommodation, and meals during her stay in Turkey.
Winnie Bwire’s battle with cancer began when she first noticed unusual symptoms, such as swelling in her hand and persistent fatigue. In an interview with Citizen TV’s Lulu Hassan, Bwire recalled how she initially dismissed these early signs, attributing them to work stress. It wasn’t until later that she realized these symptoms were indicators of a more serious illness.
Upon receiving her breast cancer diagnosis, Bwire’s life took a drastic turn. The actress, known for her vibrant personality and captivating performances, faced the possibility of losing her role as Dida on Sultana, a role that had brought her fame and recognition.
She expressed her fear of chemotherapy, not only due to the physical toll it might take on her but also because of the “misconception” that undergoing chemotherapy would automatically mean the end of her acting career.
However, Bwire continued her work as much as she could, showing remarkable strength and determination. Despite the challenges of her diagnosis, she remained committed to her craft and to inspiring others with her story of perseverance.
Winnie Bwire’s portrayal of Dida in the Sultana TV show endeared her to many fans across Kenya and beyond. Her character was known for being strong-willed, compassionate, and full of life—qualities that reflected Bwire’s personality.
Sultana is a popular drama series that follows the intertwined lives of several characters, and Bwire’s performance as Dida stood out as one of the most memorable roles on the show.
