Get Off Your High Horse and Lower the Cost of Living: Youths Scold Karen Nyamu

Karen Naymu Kotex

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu faced fierce backlash from Kenyans after issuing an apology to Kotex Kenya amidst controversy over her foundation’s initiative.

Nyamu, in a Facebook post, defended her recent claim of a potential collaboration with Kotex that the company denied, saying, “You might not endorse my political stance, but you can back the laudable initiative my foundation is advocating for,” the nominated Senator said, referring to the current protests triggered by the Finance Bill 2024, which she supported.

Nyamu highlighted her foundation’s contributions, stating, “You have seen me & my foundation pledge to causes and you have seen me on the ground delivering. You have also seen us take up causes that have benefited society. You have seen me announce successful projects.”

However, her post sparked a wave of criticism. Christine Shiro, an outraged citizen, responded, pointing out that her foundation and support would not have been necessary if the cost of living wasn’t so high.

“Karen, if this country had good governance, no one would be relying on politicians’ handouts in the name of ‘My Foundation’ which is mainly used for political milestones. You know very well how wrong you were to say the things you said but because you’re still on your high horse, you can’t recall your words and do the necessary. Listen to the people! Everyone would like to go to the supermarket and buy what they feel is right for them. Fight a noble cause, and bring the cost of living down so that everybody can afford basics. Good day.”

Kotex Kenya had released a statement to distance itself from Nyamu’s alleged partnership with them. “Kotex confirms that there have been no discussions or conversations with Karen Nyamu. Any claims about a potential partnership involving Kotex are completely untrue.

Kotex stated it did not get involved in political affiliations or endorsements and posted a screenshot of Nyamu’s post with a Fake News logo stamped on it.

“We are dedicated to maintaining transparency and accuracy in all our communications,” stated Kotex.

“Sometimes companies forget political figures are also people and what we do to impact the community is bigger than ourselves. As for Kotex Kenya, I feel sorry for the backlash you had to endure yesterday due to my political stand at a time when political temperatures in the country are hot, forcing you to make the statement you made. Our aim is not to set you up so we will let it rest there.” Nyamu said addressing Kotex Kenya’s statement in an attempt to quell the uproar.

Hannah Karanja, another Facebook user, pointed out the discrepancies in Nyamu’s claims. “I’ve just checked out Kotex’s statement to know what’s going on. It seems like you said you were in talks with them (Kotex) and it wasn’t true. Maybe you thought they’d just keep quiet but they cleared the air. In some countries, companies can sue you for riding on their name to build your brand,’ Hannah voiced.

“My foundation & I will diligently work to make sure this project will come to fruition. Nothing excites me and lights my soul like engaging the ground to make a difference. And to remind you that if I had listened to my critics and trolls years ago, I wouldn’t be where I am. I only consult the word of God, period,” Nyamu asserted, doubling down on her stance.

Millicent Ngugi, another critic, challenged Nyamu’s approach, saying, “How can you claim you’re solving a problem by overtaxing the majority’s menstrual hygiene products and giving the minority a handout? Are you going to give these few women tampons until menopause? Zero rate all products, lower the cost of living, women can buy whatever menstrual hygiene products they want. Stop the games and work for your people.”

The strong reactions highlight Kenyans’ frustration with the high cost of living and perceived failures of political leaders to address issues arising from the contentious tax bill — the final straw that triggered backlash.
