Marriage is often seen as a bed of roses, a union between a man and a woman with the full expectation of happiness. While it’s important to acknowledge the challenges some marriages face, we must also celebrate the progress that has transformed modern relationships.

During a meeting at my workplace, the question of whether our mothers and grandmothers were happily married sparked a thoughtful discussion. This reflection highlighted the resilience and strength of the older generation of women, who navigated their marriages with grace and courage despite societal expectations.

Today’s women bring a refreshing perspective to marriage, one where personal happiness and well-being are paramount. This shift has been instrumental in addressing and reducing instances of abuse, as women now feel more empowered to leave situations that no longer serve them.

The rise in awareness and support systems has contributed to a significant decrease in domestic violence cases.

Violence in marriages, although historically prevalent, is now being tackled with more vigour and determination. The physical and emotional abuse that once led to the suffering and even death of many women is being confronted head-on through education, empowerment, and legal reforms.

Women and men alike are standing up against domestic violence, creating a ripple effect of change and support.

Domestic violence is a complex issue, often rooted in low self-esteem and perpetuated by cultural norms. However, positive strides are being made to break these cycles.

Communities are coming together to raise awareness, provide support, and promote healthy relationships. Men and women are learning to value and respect themselves and each other, leading to more harmonious and loving partnerships.

Walking out of an abusive environment is a courageous step that many are now empowered to take. With the support of friends, family, and organizations dedicated to ending domestic violence, survivors are finding their voices and reclaiming their lives. This movement towards self-empowerment and mutual respect is creating a brighter, safer future for all.

While it’s crucial to recognise the hidden struggles within some marriages, it’s equally important to celebrate the progress being made. The modern approach to marriage, characterized by mutual respect and personal empowerment, is paving the way for healthier, happier relationships.

As a society, we continue to support and uplift each other, fostering a culture where love and respect flourish.
