President William Ruto has praised Kenyan athlete Hellen Obiri after her Sunday win at the New York Marathon.
“Congratulations to the phenomenal Hellen Obiri, winner of the 2023 New York Marathon. You are an inspiration for your hard work, tenacity, resilience, dedication and never-say-die spirit,” the president remarked. Obiri won the women’s open class race with a time of 2:27:23, better than Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey, who finished in second place with 2:27:29. In the last 400 meters, Hellen Obiri broke away from a very tough pack to win the New York City Marathon on Sunday.
The Abbott Marathon Major winner for this season, Sharon Lokedi, a fellow countrywoman, was among the star-studded field that the Boston Marathon champion destroyed. At 2:27:33, Lokedi completed the top three.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stated that Obiri’s triumph has increased Kenya’s global dominance in long-distance running. He claimed that the victory serves as motivation for younger athletes. “Congratulations, Hellen Obiri for your wonderful run to win the New York Marathon on Sunday. Your win cements Kenya’s high profile in long-distance running and is inspirational to upcoming athletes,” he said.
