Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga scored a brace as Al Duhail SC secured their first victory in the AFC Champions League Group Stage, defeating Al Istiklol at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium on Monday night.
The first half ended in a 0-0 draw but the second half saw Olunga scoring with a poweful header in the 47th minute.
Al Duhail’s goal prompted Al Istiklol to push forward, creating space for Duhail’s continued attacks.
In the 70th minute, a cross from Olunga inside the penalty missed its mark, but he later sealed his with another header in the 89th minute.
This marked his third goal this season in the competition and more significantly, it brought his total to 18 in the Champions League, making him Al Duhail’s leading scorer.
Speaking after the game, Olunga expressed his happiness with the victory by saying: “First of all, I am happy because we achieved our first victory in the tournament, which is good for us. We achieved what was required of us in the second half, and it is difficult to keep up with these clubs because of their chances of qualifying.”
However, the win does not improve the chances of them advancing from the group.
