Luis Rubiales: Spanish FA President Receives 3-Year Ban From FIFA

Team weighs in on Rubiales behaviour at World Cup Final

The FIFA disciplinary committee has banned former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales from “all football-related activities” for a period of three years, the governing organization announced on Monday.

Rubiales found himself in deep trouble both in Spain and globally after kissing the national team captain Jenni Hermoso in the mouth during the World Cup finals event which was captured on camera and shown globally. Luis has been the target of intense criticism ever since. He quit in September, and FIFA has now banned him from working on any football-related project for three years.

There was no indication of a romantic relationship between Jenni and Luis Rubiales at the time. Jenni called the occurrence a “natural gesture of affection” in a statement she gave to AFP and The Guardian. Following Rubiales’ misconduct, a number of Spain’s RFEF coaching staff members, including Vice President Rafael del Amo, resigned. In a statement at the time, the departing personnel stated that they were “firmly and resoundingly condemning the conduct shown by the RFEF president.”

“This case relates to the events that occurred during the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup on 20 August 2023, for which Mr Rubiales had been provisionally suspended for an initial period of 90 days,” FIFA wrote in a statement. Rubiales, the president of the RFEF since 2018, was placed on indefinite leave by FIFA on August 26 in order to conduct an investigation. The world soccer governing body said in a statement at the time, “FIFA reiterates its absolute commitment to respect the integrity of all persons and therefore condemns with the utmost vigour any behaviour to the contrary.”
