This decision comes after a meeting between inspectorate officers and hawker representatives. The new rules specify that street vending will be prohibited in the Tom Mboya section leading to Moi Avenue, effectively keeping hawkers off the pavements. Governor Sakaja emphasized that this action is aimed at ensuring the well-being of both street vendors and pedestrians.

“Starting from Tom Mboya to Moi Avenue, the connecting lanes will not permit hawking,’’ the governor stated.

Furthermore, the governor outlined plans to provide alternative arrangements for hawkers by granting them priority in the rear lanes where they can continue their business activities.

“These vendors should be given precedence in the rear lanes, as we have a plan for the road. We have secured funding for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which will be constructed to improve transportation,’’ he stated.

Governor Sakaja also highlighted the preparations to widen the road to accommodate hawking in the future. He reiterated that these measures are designed to make the roadway accessible to all users without favoritism.

In addition, the governor instructed that all inspectorate officers, commonly referred to as kanjos would undergo retraining to enhance their approach to managing operations involving street vendors. These officers will be assigned to specific locations within the CBD to improve efficiency in the sector, which has faced controversies regarding their conduct.
