The National Police Service however, released a statement dismissing the reports of arresting Kawira Mwangaza on Wednesday afternoon. According to the neighbors present, the governor was seen confronting the police officers. Shortly after, they saw her get in to the police vehicle.

In response to what was witnessed, the police mentioned that Governor Mwangaza stage-managed the incident by swiftly getting into the police vehicle to fake an arrest. She therefore, according to the police, got into the police vehicle out of her own will and not coercion from the police officers.

” Contrary to the false allegations circulating on social media, the National Police Service wishes to clarify, that Police have not arrested Meru Governor, Kawira Mwangaza,” said the police service in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

While the governor was donating cows under her Okolea program in Central Imenti, police officers showed up at the homestead. This according to the police was because the governor’s Okolea program had been banned recently by the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki. On September 22, the CS banned the holding of Okolea meetings and termed them as insightful.

The Governor later went on Facebook stating that she had been set “free” despite the police’s emphasis that they did not arrest the governor in the first place.

CS Kuria Blames Gachagua for Mwangaza’s Arrest

Cabinet Secretary, Moses Kuria, on Wednesday hinted that the Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua’s remarks are what led to Governor Mwangaza’s arrest. The CS questioned whether the arrest of the governor is what the Deputy meant when he instructed Meru leaders to solve their own wrangles.

The Deputy on October 1 announced that he would not involve himself in the ongoing dispute in Meru. He instructed that the elected leaders in the region to solve the wrangles themselves.

Governor Kawira Mwangaza was facing impeachment at the beginning of the year, when the President and his deputy intervened. In recent events, the governor is facing another possible impeachment from office in the county.

The order by the Interior CS came after chaos rocked one of Mwangaza’s ‘Okolea Program’ functions at Makiri, Igembe South Constituency. During the incident, angry residents protested by slaughtering one cow and setting ablaze mattresses that Mwagaza had come to donate to the public.
