Wedding Turns into a Funeral After Fire Claims 100 Lives

A raging fire broke out at a wedding hall in Qaraqosh, northern Iraq, resulting in a death toll of at least 100 individuals. The incident also left 150 others injured.

The fire was triggered by fireworks set off at the venue located in the Hamdaniya district of northeast Nineveh governorate. According to the Iraqi Civil Defense, an investigative committee has been established to determine the actual cause of the incident.

Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari addressed reporters, shedding light on the absence of safety criteria at the hall. The use of fireworks caused the ceiling to collapse on the guests present, intensifying the tragedy.

In response to the disaster, authorities swiftly took action, and arrested fourteen individuals connected to the incident. The Iraqi government has vowed to bring those responsible for negligence to justice. Results of the investigation are expected to be announced within 72 hours.

With approximately 1,300 guests in attendance when the fire broke out, the horrifying incident has left the community in shock. The groom, Rivan Esho, and his bride, Haneen, are currently receiving medical treatment, as confirmed by the groom’s father.

Criticism has been directed at the hall’s owner, who is being held accountable for the lack of safety measures. Survivors and witnesses have expressed their concern. Questions have risen over the absence of fire extinguishers and appropriate safety precautions within the venue.

The wedding hall was reportedly covered with highly flammable Ecobond panels, violating safety instruction requirements. Iraqi Civil Defense highlighted the hazardous building materials. He noted their tendency to collapse within minutes when exposed to fire.

Nonetheless, the incident has prompted grief and mourning across the nation. Horrifying videos from the scene depicted thick smoke coming out of the Al Haytham Wedding Hall. Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani has extended his condolences. He directed his cabinet to provide assistance to those affected by the fire.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq has also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries. The body termed the incident as an “immense tragedy.” The Iraqi government has declared a three-day national mourning period.
