The things people do in the name of lust and love will forever remain unfathomable. An Australian man Paul Iera, attempted to pull off a vanishing act on New Year’s Eve. Iera, a 35-year-old tradesman from New South Wales, had planned a romantic gate-away with his mistress. This was arranged under the guise of a meeting with his “financial guy.” However, things took a wrong turn when he cooked a kidnapping tale to explain his absence to his partner. Out of desperation, Iera and his mistress sent a doubtful text, masquerading as his supposed kidnappers.

According to the text, these dangerous men demanded a “bike” as ransom. It appears precision was not their strong suit. Amusingly, the text intended to buy time for their escapade backfired spectacularly. The text set off a series of events that were to land Iera in trouble. His partner, rightly concerned, reported the incident to the police. Hence, that initiated a 200-hour police investigation.

Days later, Iera was caught in his own web as the authorities intercepted him and his mistress at a police roadblock. An incident that hilariously shattered his kidnapping. The 35-year-old man tried swaying the police off with tales of being held captive by unknown Middle Eastern men. However, the truth emerged, and Iera found himself facing charges for his ill-conceived antics.

It was at that moment, that Iera was ordered to pay back the cost of the extensive police operation. A cost which amounted to approximately $10,000 (Ksh. 1.48 million). Magistrate Michael Ong, presiding over the case, didn’t mince his words. He labelled Iera’s actions as “abhorrent.” The motive for his escapade, according to the magistrate, was the least compelling he had ever encountered.

Iera’s lawyer issued a statement on his behalf, expressing gratitude for avoiding a jail sentence. The lawyer added that his client was committed to rehabilitation. On the other hand, it is unknown if Iera’s mistress was arraigned and charged as an accomplice. All in all, one could only hope that Iera’s wife finds a place in her heart to forgive her husband..
