Newcastle, who were runners-up to Manchester United in last year’s final, made 10 changes from Sunday’s 8-0 victory against Sheffield United.

Guardiola made eight changes to the side that defeated Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with Jack Grealish and Mateo Kovacic returning to action after injury.

With Phillips and Kovacic controlling the midfield battle, the Magpies were absent as an attacking force.

While maintaining their discipline, Howe’s team adopted a passive approach against City’s dominant possession.

They were fortunate to remain on level terms at halftime, as Julian Alvarez squandered two promising opportunities.

However, when Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon were introduced at halftime, Newcastle underwent a dramatic change, leading to Isak scoring a goal after Joelinton’s excellent footwork.

The Magpies’ second-half display, was full of energy and endeavour and played largely in the face of a City side who could not react.

“Pre-game, the run last year was in our thoughts,It was an inspiration to us and helped our season, albeit the final maybe affected our league results. We look back on it with real pride,”Howe said in an interview with Sky Sports.

Alexander Isak hopes to go all the way in the Carabao Cup.

For Pep Guardiola’s side, it was just a second loss in the last 38 games in all competitions.

Manchester City’s defeat to Newcastle in the third round follows on from a quarter-final exit at the hands of Southampton last season.

The result means any hopes of Guardiola’s side completing the quadruple are already over.

Newcastle’s victory on Wednesday sets them up for a fourth-round opportunity to seek revenge.
