Alvaro Morata, a former Los Blancos striker, opened the scoring, followed by Antoine Griezmann’s contribution.

Despite a brief comeback from Real Madrid with a goal from veteran midfielder Toni Kroos just before halftime, Morata quickly reestablished Atlético’s two-goal lead right at the start of the second half.

This time, there were no dramatic late heroics from Madrid’s emerging superstar, Jude Bellingham, who faced his first defeat since joining the Spanish capital in the summer.

The loss marked the end of Madrid’s perfect start to the La Liga season, as they dropped points for the first time in this campaign.

Carlo Ancelotti tactics had backfired and he was quick to hold himself accountable.“I could have done better, maybe, that’s quite clear,” Ancelotti said after the match.

“When the team doesn’t do the right thing it’s my responsibility. But I’ve got broad shoulders, it’s not a problem,” he added.

Real Madrid’s midfield quartet controlled possession, while Atlético made the most of their limited time with the ball.

Morata’s second was enough to seal a memorable victory for Diego Simeone’s men, who secured only their second derby win in the league since the 2015/16 season.

Madrid occupies the third position in La Liga, trailing Girona by just one point, with Barcelona leading the league while Atletico sits at the fifth place.
