Obstetric violence is a grave and pervasive issue that not only infringes upon the rights of women but also contradicts the fundamental principles of compassionate and respectful maternity care.

During a sensitization meeting held at Boma Hotel in Nairobi on September 27, Honorable Gathoni Wamuchomba, a prominent advocate for women’s rights and the immediate former chair of KEWOPA, highlighted the distressing reality faced by women in labour wards and delivery rooms. She pointed out the inhumane treatment, coercive procedures, unwarranted detention, denial of essential sustenance, and medication that women have endured.

Additionally, Honorable Gathoni Wamuchomba is spearheading the Heshimu Uzazi Campaign, and KEWOPA is fully committed to supporting her in this endeavour.

“We at Kenya Women Parliamentary Association feel the pain of every mother, sister and daughter who has been a victim in one way or the other, and share the pain of those who have experienced this form of violence,” said Leah Sankaire Sopiato, the association Chairlady.

“We as women legislators continue to be committed to a violent free society, a people that not only appreciate the demerits of the practice but also understand that it undermines the rights of women and girls,” she added.

Honourable Sankaire also remarked on the association’s commitment to work on ensuring there is a legal framework in place to ensure that pregnant women are cushioned against this form of violence.

Invited guest Auntie Jemimah, a comedian and radio host at Gukena fm, also spoke during the meeting. She said that every woman has a right to decent and dignified maternal care.

Honourable Sankaire affirmed the association’s resolve to work towards establishing a legal framework that safeguards pregnant women from such forms of violence.

Auntie Jemimah, a comedian and radio host at Gukena FM, who was invited as a guest speaker during the meeting, asserted that every woman deserves dignified and respectful maternal care.

KEWOPA pledged to continue its legislative and advocacy efforts and remain steadfast in its pursuit of justice for victims.

Since its inception, KEWOPA has been at the forefront of advocating for the elimination of all forms of women’s rights through the enactment of legislation, advocacy campaigns, and community engagement initiatives.
