A 12-year-old pupil was found dead in a classroom at Sare Primary School in Awendo, Migori County. The authorities are now working diligently to uncover the circumstances that made him commit suicide.
The young student, a grade four pupil, tragically lost his life in what is suspected to be a suicide. The grim discovery was made on Tuesday morning when fellow pupils arrived at school.
Speaking on the matter, the area Chief, Paul Ogweno, expressed his concern and the urgency of the situation, saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic event. Our primary focus right now is to determine what led to this young boy taking such a drastic step.”
The boy’s mother, still in shock, shared that her son had left home that morning like any other day and had not shown any signs of distress.
She said, “I never imagined he was going through anything like this. He didn’t talk about any problems he might have been facing.”
The deceased pupil’s body has been transferred to the Rapcom Hospital mortuary, awaiting an autopsy as part of the ongoing police investigation.
Chief Ogweno also took this opportunity to call upon parents to engage in open and frequent conversations with their children.
He emphasized, “Many children could be silently struggling, and without our attention and emotional support, they might resort to extreme measures like suicide.”
He added, “We must recognize that children, as well as adults, may need psychosocial support when dealing with stress and challenges in their lives.”
Disturbingly, Migori County has seen a rising trend in mental health issues, according to data from the County Department of Health.
