As the lasting summer heat continues to take hold in China, cities are using centralized cooling systems to provide relief to their residents.
The southern metropolis of Guangzhou stands out for its groundbreaking approach to keeping public spaces comfortably chilled. The cooloing system is used in one of their libraries which has tens of thousands of visitors who come by during the summer vacation period. Instead of relying on conventional air conditioning, the library taps into the centralized cooling system, which supplies chilled water to maintain an oasis of comfort for visitors.

It is much cheaper to buy chilled water than to set up our own air conditioning units. It also consumes less electricity.
An official from the library administration shared.
At the heart of this pioneering cooling solution is a nearby cooling station that employs a unique process to deliver chilled water. Workers at the cooling station utilize electricity to generate ice during off-peak hours. This ice is then strategically melted, stored in a reservoir, and subsequently pumped back into the centralized cooling system.

The result is a continuous cycle of energy-efficient cooling that effectively caters to the cooling needs of the city’s inhabitants.
“We will create ice during the night at off-peak electricity prices. When demand rises in the daytime, the inflow of hot water can melt the ice and generate cold water, which will be pumped back to clients’ cooling systems.”
The operator of the cooling station elaborated on the process stated.
The impact of China’s cooling innovation extends beyond its borders. Data from the research firm Global Market Insights confirms that the global heating and cooling market is projected to reach 1.4 trillion US dollars by 2027.
