Netflix has expanded its operations in Africa. It premiered its first-ever original African Animation series, Supa Team 4. This is following the success of other African-produced shows like Blood and Water, first released in 2019.
The animation’s writer, Malenga Mulendema, pitched the show in a Pan-African talent search. The talent search, hosted by The Triggerfish Animation Studios, awarded the Zambian writer as the winner, in 2015.
Supa Team 4 was originally titled Mama Ks Team4 before being changed. The series is set up in Lusaka, Zambia and features four teen superheroes. Ideally, these undercover African superheroes were recruited by a former spy. The teen superheroes fight crime whilst navigating life and school challenges.
Malenga shared her commitment to bringing African representation across the global market. Thus inspiring African girls to be their own superheroes.
“In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero.”

The show’s theme song was composed by Sampa the Great. Sampa pointed out the song’s significance to young Zambians. Malenga said she is excited about the historic milestone and hopes it will be received by the global audience.
“I’m excited that the world finally gets to see the fantastic show that incredibly talented super team, from Africa and beyond have put together. We hope that Supa Team 4, will lead to further investments and collaborations so we can continue to grow the industry.”
