Hawaii Wildfires: Death Toll Rises to 93

Hawaii Wildfires

The death toll in the Hawaii wildfires has risen to 93 in what has been described as the ‘deadliest US fire in over a century’.

Speaking during a press conference on Saturday, Hawaii Governor Josh Green described the wildfires as the largest natural disaster that the state had ever experienced. He highlighted that it was going to take a long time for the state to recover from the effects of the fire. Late on Sunday, the death toll was reported to be at 93, and there are still warnings that it could get higher in the coming days.

CBS News reported that thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes due to deadly wildfires raging in Hawaii, which are being fed by a combination of atmospheric and ground conditions that can produce “fire weather.” Much of Maui’s historic town of Lahaina was destroyed by a large fire. It is also reported that when the flames started, a large portion of Hawaii was under a red flag fire risk warning, but the exact cause of the devastating wildfires is still a mystery.

We don’t know what actually ignited the fires, but we were made aware in advance by the National Weather Service that we were in a red-flag situation.

commander general of the Hawaii Army National Guard, Maj. Gen. Kenneth Hara told the press.

In this instance, a red flag situation is characterized by prolonged dry conditions, which left the fuel, trees, and everything else extremely dry. The commander said that the dry conditions coupled with low humidity and strong winds created the perfect atmosphere for the wildfires that have ravaged Maui.

Search efforts are undergoing in Hawaii to identify missing people who may have been in the areas burned down. The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that it has been spray-painting vehicles and structures on Front Street with an “X” to indicate that they have undergone an initial inspection but that there may still be human remains present. If crews complete another pass-through and discover remains, they will add the letters “HR.”
