Doctors at MTRH fix amputated arm

Doctors at The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) have successfully reimplanted an amputated arm on a 35-year-old man who has only been identified as BK.

According to a statement posted on the hospital’s social media platforms, the operation took up to 11 hours to complete and is said to be among the most uncommon procedures to ever be performed in East Africa. The statement also revealed that the patient was referred to the facility from Sigowet Subcounty Hospital in Kericho after what was termed a domestic assault.

The patient arrived at MTRH at 4 p.m. on August 8, and his dismembered limb was stored in a cooler box before he was brought to the operating room within 15 minutes. BK is said to be doing well in recovery after the long hours of surgery and has even been moved out of the ICU.

The hospital reported that BK was now in the General Orthopedics(Male) Ward where he will continue with daily reviews/initiation of Occupational Therapy rehabilitation. The 11-hour surgery was undertaken by 13 specialized surgical doctors who have been lauded for their effort in restoring BK’s arm;

The hospital reported that there are only three hand specialist surgeons in Kenya, one in Nairobi, another in Nakuru, and Paul Mwangi at MTRH.

The statement by the CEO of MTRH also noted that the hospital would enroll the patient, BK, into NHIF as part of the government’s Universal Health Coverage plan to facilitate the highest level and quality specialized healthcare for Kenyans.
