Traditionally, the Community Shield sees the winners of the Premier League take on the holders of the FA Cup.

However, City won both of these trophies last season meaning they had to take on the Premier League runners-up, Arsenal.

Pep Guardiola’s men had been completely dominant in the early exchanges with Julian Alvarez just failing to make a significant connection with a header.

New signing, Kai Havertz had two brilliant chances in the opening 45 but was denied by Stefan Ortega on each occasion.

After 70 minutes in the season curtain-raiser, Cole Palmer looked to have won it for City when the substitute curled home a stunning strike.

But Leandro Trossard equalized in the 101minute when his shot deflected into the back of the net.

After an intense 90 minutes plus extra time, the score line remained deadlocked at 1-1.

The tension was palpable and the fate of the Community Shield would be decided through a penalty shootout.

Substitute Kevin de Bruyne struck the crossbar before Rodri saw his effort saved.

Aaron Ramsdale emerged the hero, making crucial saves that tilted the balance in favor of the Gunners.

“I’m extremely happy, proud and relieved at the same time, because it doesn’t get any better than winning at Wembley in front of your fans and playing the best team in the world,” said Arteta.

City has now lost the Community Shield in three straight years, having been defeated by Leicester in 2021 and Liverpool in 2022.
