Immediately after the tragedy, first responders from Kiambu County were on the scene accompanied by the local police. They managed to deliver essential emergency services to the injured and rescued some of the family members.

“Concrete that covered the water well later collapsed due to the weight of the said persons, and as a result, over 17 persons drowned,” said the spokesperson.

As a response by the police, a few of the people injured were rushed to the nearest medical facilities (Ruiru Hospital) to get aid. Most of the victims needed immediate urgent medical attention. Additionally, police officers and health officers administered Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to rescue those still alive.

Furthermore, the police instructed the members not to put too much weight on concrete wells in the future. They laid emphasis on its possibility of caving in and collapse.

Eleven people were retrieved from the well, inclusive of two children who were part of the officiating process of the wedding ceremony.
