From Cooking to Kissing: Nigerians Craze for Guinness World Records

Since renowned chef Hilda Baci’s successful cook-a-thon, the Guinness World Records (GWR) has reported an influx of approximately 1,500 applications from Nigerians aspiring to achieve record-breaking feats. Baci recently obtained the title for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, surpassing the previous record set by Lata Tondon of India.

The incredible achievement by Chef Baci seems to have ignited a spark within the Nigerian community, inspiring many individuals to replicate her success. In an interview with Nigeria’s digital media outlet, Legit NG, the GWR acknowledged the impact of Baci’s cooking marathon, stating,

The attention and excitement that Hilda Baci’s cooking marathon gained was certainly an incentive for many Nigerians to consider attempting a Guinness World Records title.

Since Baci’s record attempt, the GWR has received a surge of over 1,500 record applications from Nigeria, particularly in the category of marathon records. This notable increase signifies the enthusiasm and ambition within the Nigerian culinary landscape, as individuals strive to push their own boundaries and leave their mark in the world of cooking.

Baci’s record-setting feat, certified by the GWR in June, involved cooking for an impressive 93 hours and 11 minutes, surpassing Tondon’s previous record of 87 hours and 45 minutes set in 2019. While Baci identified some loopholes in the previous record during her high-profile attempt, her accomplishment has now inspired thousands of Nigerians to seek their own Guinness World Records, with some ventures reaching into unconventional domains.

As a result, Nigerians have invented a variety of marathons, including “Kiss-a-thon,” massaging, lecturing, praise and worship, crying marathon, and even a “sex-a-thon,” prompting the GWR to issue a cautionary statement: “Please enough with the record-a-thons.”

Amidst the attention and notoriety gained by these endeavors, speculations arose suggesting that the GWR may ban Nigerians from registering or attempting to break records. However, the GWR clarified in their statement to Legit NG that there are no plans to impose such a ban. They expressed their enthusiasm for the influx of Nigerian applicants and emphasized that record-breaking is open to all.
