Davido Takes Down Controversial Video Amid Backlash From Muslim Community

The video shows a group of Muslim men engaged in prayer before they suddenly start dancing and singing.

A good number of Muslims found it offensive towards their religion and perceived it as sacrilege.

Among those who criticized the video were actor, Ali Nuhu, and former aide to ex-president, Bashir Ahmad, who called on Davido to not only take down the video but to issue an apology.

Bashir Ahmed went ahead to mention that the Muslim religion does not take lightly mixing sacred rituals like prayer with entertainment.

Davido’s fans came to his rescue defending him but that created more tension as more and more Muslims shared their sentiments and demanded the video be taken down to avoid any more offence to their religion.

Eventually, Davido deleted the video acknowledging that he had unintentionally offended and caused hurt to the Muslim community and wanted to solve the issue amicably.

The response to Davido taking down the video was received well by most. Many praised him and his PR for handling the issue fast without stirring any more trouble.

Currently, whether or not Davido will issue an official apology is yet to be known. No further statement has been released on the issue.

Musicians and Artists have been mixing entertainment with religion and other cultural traditions and rites since time immemorial. It is not unusual to see Music videos having dancers dressed as Catholic nuns or incorporating cultural clothing, traditional and religious rites in their music videos.

It is nothing new, with most artists arguing every human being has a right to express themselves and championing freedom of speech.

However, it is a challenge to be absolutely free to say and do what we please and equally expect to live harmoniously without offending anyone, in a new-age world that is globalised, digital, diverse and multicultural.
