Eastern Chinese town turns abandoned farmhouses into rural getaways

Nestled in the hills of East China’s Anhui Province, a batch of renovated farmhouses have become the latest hotspot for holidaymakers.

In 2018, the government began purchasing the residences from local farmers and invited design teams to renovate them.

Now, tourists who want a break from the hustle and bustle of big city living are booking the homes for their breathtaking scenery and modern amenities.

My child’s birthday is coming, so I brought her here to enjoy the mountain view and take in some fresh air.

Officials say the local tourism sector has become a big contributor to the economy.

This year, our occupancy rate can reach 60% on weekdays and 100% on holidays.

The renovation program has generated about 1, 500 jobs for residents.

The success of this initiative not only provides a breath of fresh air for weary travelers but also serves as a shining example of the transformative power of thoughtful preservation and community collaboration.

Local farmers have also benefited from this endeavor, as they receive compensation for their properties and have the opportunity to engage in the tourism industry.
