The 19-year-old, who joined Dortmund from Birmingham City in July 2020, grabbed interest from Man City and Real Madrid.

However, Real are willing to pay around 100m euros for Bellingham but Dortmund are understood to want 150m euros.

Real is confident the midfielder has turned down a contract offer to stay at Dortmund – wants to join them but Manchester City are still interested too.

Liverpool dropped out of the race to sign Bellingham this summer because of the cost involved. Speaking at the time Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said the club’s interest in Bellingham was like a “child wanting a Ferrari for Christmas”.

When Bellingham left Birmingham for Dortmund for £25m, becoming the most expensive 17-year-old in the history of football, the Championship side was mocked by some for retiring the teenager’s shirt number, despite him only playing one full season of professional football.

He excelled at Dortmund and in October last year, he made history by becoming the club’s youngest captain aged 19.

Bellingham has played 40 times for his club this season – scoring 11 goals and registering seven assists.

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock speaking to Sky Sports News:

“I’m not shocked if I’m being completely honest. When Liverpool pulled out of the race, it was almost due to the fact they knew that Bellingham might go to Real Madrid.

“When Bellingham went to Germany, it tells you everything about his personality and the player: he wants to push himself, test himself, learn new languages and play for big clubs.

“You can’t deny him going to Real Madrid, it is a magnificent club. It is steeped in history, tradition and everything about it.

“You look that the players who have gone before and what it is about – I think it’s a brilliant move.

“I would love to see him at Liverpool, I really would.

“But you look at the move and think: what a brilliant move for such a young player to go to such a huge club.
