Azimio’s leader, Raila Odinga is claiming that President William Ruto is determined to rule Kenya indefinitely by removing the presidential term limit.

During the Jubilee Party National Delegates Conference held at the Ngong Race Course in Nairobi, Odinga claimed that the Kenya Kwanza regime seeks to obtain a super majority in Parliament, allowing them to revise the constitution and accommodate Ruto’s continuous rule.

According to Odinga, the schemes against the Jubilee Party are part of a broader strategy by Kenya Kwanza to secure a dominant presence in Parliament. This dominance would grant them the power to manipulate the constitution and potentially remove the limits on presidential terms.

Odinga expressed his concerns about the repercussions of such actions, emphasizing the need to protect Kenya’s democratic principles.

“The end game for Kenya Kwanza in its schemes against Jubilee is to give itself a supermajority in Parliament that will enable them to amend the constitution towards desired goals, including the possible removal of presidential term limits,” Odinga said.

Odinga compared the Ruto-led government and the events of 1964, when the Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU) merged with the Kenya African National Union (KANU) without seeking a fresh mandate from the electorate.

“Kenya Kwanza is working on an arrangement similar to that of 1964 that saw KADU walk across the aisle and join KANU without its members of Parliament having to seek a fresh mandate,” Odinga claimed.

“Kenya Kwanza wants to ensure that Jubilee as a party does not continue to exist on this side of the aisle.” He added.

“They want Jubilee dead the same way KADU did after which Kenya Kwanza will try to enact the train of events that followed that saw Kenya become a de facto one-party democracy in 1969 before it was made a de jure one-party state in one afternoon in 1982,” Odinga cautioned.

As the nation awaits further developments, the concerns raised by Odinga add fuel to the already heated political landscape, calling for heightened vigilance in safeguarding Kenya’s democratic institutions and principles.
