RELEGATION

Premier League rules on relegation are straightforward The three clubs sitting in the 18,19 and 20 position by the end of the season are automatically relegated. Unlike in Bundesliga there is no reprieve of relegation in the play off. After playing each Premier League side twice that is home and away, the bottom three teams are relegated.

If two clubs are level on points, the first tie breaker is goal difference. this refers to the number of goals scored by a team in question minus the goals conceded. if goal difference from both sides is equal, number of goals scored is the next decisive factor. In the unlikely event that none of the above separates the two sides, a play off on a neutral ground take place.

Dropping out of the premier league presents a threat to the clubs in that they incur a loss of an estimate between $111- $125 million. The tittle of the most relegated club goes to Norwich City with six relegations.

Here are the most relegated teams in the Premier League:

  • Norwich City (6): 1994/95, 2004/05, 2013/14, 2015/16, 2019/20, 2021/22
  • West Bromwich Albion (5): 2002/03, 2005/06, 2008/09, 2017/18, 2020/21
  • Crystal Palace (4): 1992/93, 1994/95, 1997/98, 2004/05
  • Middlesbrough (4): 1992/93, 1996/97, 2008/09. 2016/17
  • Sunderland (4): 1996/97, 2002/03, 2005/06, 2016/17

In he 2022/23 season Southampton, Leeds United and Leicester City were relegated with 25, 31 and 34 points respectively with Everton surviving on the final day.

PROMOTION

Three Championship teams have to fill the three spots left by the Premier League relegated clubs each season. The first and second team to be promoted are those that finish in the top two of England’s second tier.

The final promotion spot is snatched by a team that can successfully navigate the playoffs. The four clubs that finish below the automatic promotion spots that is third- sixth enter into a mini tournament a the end of the regular season.

The third and sixth team meet and same applies for the teams at the fourth and fifth position. The winner of each tie then faces off at Wembley. this contest is dubbed the richest match because of the financial benefits that come with promotion to the Premier League. The winner will make at least £135 million in the first season after promotion and an additional £130 million the following season if that team avoids relegation in the following season.

This kind of money buys players and used in stadium improvements. teams like Fulham and Norwich are described as yo-yo teams because they bounce back and forth between divisions.

Premier league makes good money out of broadcasting rights because it is available in almost every country. This means money from the League trickles down to the teams. Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton Town were promoted to the Premier League this season.

Sadly, it’s hard to ever say that any good comes from being relegated. The downsides to being relegated are just too substantial. Just being associated with the Premier League is a massive privilege that comes with elevated income for each participating club, and those squads that are forced to drop down into the Championship division can only hope that their “parachute payments” — small payments from the Premier League to help relegated teams cope with income loss — provide enough of a bridge to keep viable players so they can retool and prepare to make a run at promotion.
