The Kenyan government has proposed a 15% withholding tax on income earned by content creators. This tax would apply to all income earned from digital content monetization, including but not limited to sponsorships, affiliate marketing, merchandise sales, and paid subscriptions.
The government has said that the tax is necessary to widen the tax base and to ensure that everyone who earns an income from digital content pays their fair share of taxes. However, content creators have criticized the tax, saying that it is unfair and will stifle creativity.
Majority of the Kenyan content creator has come out to air their opinion comparing the proposed bill to an act of milking a young cow.
