In an extraordinary and empowering display of self-love, a 77-year-old woman in the United States has recently married herself, declaring that “life is about me now.”
The groundbreaking act has sparked both curiosity and admiration among the local community and beyond.
Dorothy “Dottie” Fideli expressed a mix of nerves and excitement as she approached her special day, according to an interview with NBC affiliate KCEN.
The emotional and symbolic wedding occurred on May 13 at the O’Bannon Terrace Retirement Community in Goshen, Ohio, surrounded by neighbors, friends, and family.
Today, a news outlet, reported that Ms. Fideli had previously married in 1965 but divorced nine years later.
“I said, you know what, I’ve done everything else. Why not? I’m going to marry myself,” she told the outlet.
Upon making the decision to proceed with her distinctive wedding, Ms. Fideli dedicated her attention to organizing the momentous occasion.

She enlisted the assistance of Rob Geiger, the property manager of her retirement home, to aid in the planning process.
“I came in here and I told Rob, I said, ‘Rob, you’re going to marry me’,” said Ms Fideli. “He said, ‘You’re what?'”
Ms. Fideli’s daughter also played an active role in the preparations, generously contributing by purchasing the dress, arranging for flowers, and taking charge of cooking for the guests in attendance.
“She goes, ‘Oh, Mom, yeah, let’s go do it. I’ll go get your dress, I’ll get you everything’,” Ms Fideli told Today.
As part of the decorations, a delightful two-tiered white cake adorned with red roses graced the celebration. Heart-shaped cookies and finger sandwiches shaped like wedding bells added to the festive ambiance.
When reflecting on her emotions that day, Ms. Fideli shared, “I was initially nervous, but then I experienced overwhelming happiness.” Her description encapsulated the range of feelings she experienced during the event.
According to WLWT’s report, Ms. Fideli was inspired to marry herself by her neighbors who had seen a similar act on a talk show. The idea resonated with her, prompting her to embark on this unique journey of self-affirmation.
“I have been with myself for 40 years,” the 77-year-old said, adding that while she was at church she realised she wanted to “do something special” for herself.
