EPL: Top-Four Bid, Chelsea defeat, Haaland nets twice for city

Manchester United’s solid 2-0 win over Everton holds onto a place in the Champions League next season as Chelsea faces a 1-0 defeat in Frank Lampard’s first game at Wolves. Meanwhile, Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City reduced the gap to Premier League leaders Arsenal to five points with a comfortable 1-4 win at Southampton.

Haaland who missed the City match against Liverpool in the Premier League with a groin injury, put up a show extending his league tally this season to 30 goals in 27 games making it his 44th goal in all competitions for City this season.

The game saw Kevin de Bruyne tick his 100th Premier League assist as he set up Haaland to give dominant City a half-time lead at St Mary.

It completed an eighth consecutive win in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Haaland, Grealish, and Álvarez all on the score sheet.

Guardiola’s side goes into the home first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against German champions Bayern Munich on Tuesday full of confidence.

Manchester United Boost Top-Four Bid

Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay were both on target as United deepen Everton’s relegation fears in a 2-0 win at Old Trafford.

The red Devils strengthened their hope of a top-four place with Scott McTominay’s well-taken first-half effort and Anthony Martial’s first Premier League goal since December was all that United for victory.

However, there was a concern for the hosts when Marcus Rashford was forced to leave the field and was pictured walking very gingerly up the tunnel to the home dressing room.

Ten Hag side will face Sevilla in Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final with Sevilla. Martial’s return, along with Christian Eriksen is a boost for the squad.

Victory takes Erik Ten Hag’s men up to third and opens up a six-point cushion over fifth-placed Tottenham.

Chelsea was defeated on Lampard’s return

Frank Lampard’s first game back in charge ended in a 1-0 defeat at the Wolves.

However, Lampard made a surprise return to Stamford Bridge on Thursday when he was appointed until the end of the season following Graham Potter’s exit last Sunday after just seven months in charge.

Lampard ex-Chelsea midfielder was dismissed by the club’s former owner Roman Abramovich in January 2021, and could not provide an immediate lift for the Blues.

The Blues are on their third manager this season following Potter’s exit and Thomas Tuchel’s sacking in September, remaining 11th after a fourth consecutive game without a win.

Newcastle top four race

Third-placed Newcastle are above United on goal difference after a 2-1 success at Brentford made it five consecutive wins for the Magpies.

Ivan Toney missed a penalty making it the first miss from the spot since 2018 for the Brentford forward.

Tottenham are three points behind Newcastle after beating Brighton 2-1 in north London.

Son Heung-min’s goal inside 10 minutes makes it his 100 goals making him the first Asian player to reach that landmark.
