President Ruto: There was an Attempt to Abduct and Kill Chebukati

Kenyan President William Ruto has said that there was a direct attempt to kill the outgoing IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati during the August 9, 2022 elections.

Speaking during a meeting with Constitutional Commissions and Independent Institutions at State House in Nairobi on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, Ruto clarified that he is aware that a few individuals were interested in compromising the results of the election and threatened Chebukati to change the presidential results.

“We know that there was a direct attempt to abduct Wafula Chebukati and kill him so that the commission would be paralyzed, or a compliant commissioner takes over and change the people’s sovereignty,” said Ruto.

The Head of State in his statement added that he was privy to the fact that the entire commissioners of the electoral body were also put under threatening orders and were even promised a good sum amount of money if they played to the tune of the ‘system’.
