- Timing
Even Cinderella understood the timing concept to a fault. Do not just barge into your manager’s office demanding your dues. If anything, strategize on the best time to have a conversation about your wages. You can also time when the business is at its peak, then raise the issue about pay. Strike while the iron’s hot.
- Don’t just ask, justify!
It is one thing to say you need more appreciation on your paycheck and another thing to not explain why. No boss or manager will be willing to agree to your demands just like that. Be smart about it. Draft a list of all you have done that has contributed towards the business’s achievements. This will market you and helps your manager rationalize why you need a wage increase.
- Have a new figure in mind
This part here is where all strikes hit rock bottom. You know you want a pay rise but have no idea how much you want. When you decide to have this conversation with your boss, highlight the figures you wish to have as your new salary. A good way of coming up with a reasonable figure is by researching other companies, to see how much they pay employees working in the same position you are.

- Present your request in writing
Do not just present your demands orally. It makes you look unfocused. Instead, write your request in an official and direct way. Stop with the nitty gritty and get to the point Jenifer. This shows you value the communication processes of the business and that could be a plus that works in your favor.

- Confidence is key
Just know that once you start this conversation, there is no backing down. Be confident and air out all your grievances, in a respectful way of course. Explain all your facts clearly and make sure to also hear what your boss/manager has to say about this. In the long run, good things come to those who don’t give up.
