Football fans are still nostalgic after a thrilling World Cup tournament in Qatar, and this will go on for a while. The Carabao Cup resumed on Wednesday, much to the delight of millions. Manchester United hosted Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday with a spot in the Quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on the line.

Man United Manager Erik Ten Haag brought in five players who had featured for their nations at the World Cup. Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, and Tyrell Malacia started. Match fitness must have been the main reason for this and it paid out.

In the 27th minute, Old Trafford was roaring in the first fixture in six weeks, after Christian Eriksen opened the scoring. Bruno Fernandes picked out Aaron Wan Bissaka who acrobatically assisted Eriksen. 1-0 United!

Marcus Rashford was the star of the night. The 25-year-old showed signs of returning to form in a Man of the Match performance. 12 minutes after the halftime break, Rashford with a menacing solo goal to extend the ‘Red Devils’ lead.

Burnley Manager Vincent Kompany will have much to work on with his strikers as they missed chances that would have given them a share or even all of the results on the night. United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka made three major goalkeeping errors that could have cost United the win. The most glaring, missing the ball as it slides under his foot following a back pass. In another incident, Casemiro cleared the ball off the line after Dubravka’s effort to punch clear from a Burnley cross was rather tame.

Alejandro Granacho had the chance to score in the second half but he did not catch the ball as he would have wished. Garnacho had scored United’s last goal in competitive football back in November, a winner against Fulham.

United Manager Erik Ten Haag must be seeing the Carabao Cup as his best chance of grabbing any silverware this season, especially with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham already eliminated.

Manchester City face Liverpool on Thursday for a place in the Quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
