Several legislators have said that they would start collecting signatures on Wednesday, November 23, to oust Moses Kuria from his position as the cabinet secretary in charge of trade and industrialization.
This comes at a time when the country expects the first legal shipment of GMO maize into the country, highly defended by cabinet secretaries. Kuria had stated that the government would provide a six-month window for the duty-free entry of 10 million bags of GMO maize.
The MPs, led by Pokot South MP David Pkosing, are calling for Kuria to be removed from office because of his stance on the entrance of GMO maize into the country.
The government’s intention to permit the importation of GMO maize, according to Pkosing, would disenfranchise the local farmers since they are now in the harvest season.
Samson Cherargei, Nandi senator, asserted that although numerous bags of GMO maize had already entered the nation, the legal procedure for approving the import into Kenya had yet to be followed.
However, according to the senator, there is an intentional effort to end maize growing in Kenya. During the preceding regimes, the local sugar industry experienced the same fate.
The lawmakers worry that an infusion of maize from the international market will have a detrimental effect on maize prices in the country.
