The truth about my dress my choice movement

Woes of my dress my choice

When the world is advancing with new technology, people want to express themselves with how they dress. However, we can only go so far until it becomes extreme.

August 7th of 2022, was a bad day for Liliane Mugabekazi, a Rwandese woman after she was arrested and sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for what they termed public indecency. Lilian, like any other person, wanted to look good for that concert she was attending and settled for a sheer dress, it is a shame it did not spew the reaction she wanted though.

“She attended the concert while wearing clothes that reveal her private parts… clothes that we call shameful,” prosecutors said, accusing her of committing a “serious crime”. Honestly, I have no power to pass judgment on her because simply put, I was not there with her.

Her story is not the only controversial one when it comes to dressing code. It takes me way back to when Kilimani mums were deeply rooting for the freedom to dress however they want. ‘my dress my choice’ it was called. I know you are aware of it.

I actually get it. We live in a democratic country that allows us to be as free as we can in our worship, living, political affiliations, and even dressing. However, too much freedom is poisonous, isn’t it? Think about it. When we are rooting for freedom of dress code it comes with its implications. That is why these days, a lady can literally go to church with a V-neck dress, her ‘girls’ all out and it would not be an issue because she has freedom.

There is also the issue of moral corruption for our kids. When your son sees you in sagged jeans, they would also want to do the same because daddy does it. And then what? I do not blame them because they are seeing these things being done by the very same people who are supposed to be instilling virtue in them.

Okay okay, before I get hate for this, here are my two cents. I still believe in the power of freedom of dressing. However, we should be wise enough to know when is the most appropriate time for what shirt, when it is okay to sag, or even wear that sheer dress like Lilian. (Sorry Lilian for dragging you into this, I had no choice).
