Part of Kenyan culture is street food, as many enjoy snacking by the roadside where the fast food vendors camp to sell the delicacies.
Most Kenyans in the urban centres are adopting the Street food culture, as the number of food vendors is surging and more Kenyans stop by for a bite of a variety of eat on the go food.
Some of the street foods familiar with Kenyans and probably something to try when visiting the country.
- Mtura
My best friend once mentioned casually that she hates mtura. Imagine the shock on my face after I had such an abomination. Needless to say, I ensured that she choked on her words.
Mtura is at the top of the list of favorite snacks for Kenyans, especially at around 7 pm when they get off work. Rumours have it that the one served in dark places hit the best.
- Smokies
There is something about these snacks that make you just forget about your problems. Like seriously, they are so good. Especially if they are served when hot, with a little kachumbari and ‘firifiri ya umbali’ hot pepper.

- Mayai boiled
If you have never tried these, make it a point to do so as soon as possible. I won’t say much about mayai. Mejja said enough in his lyrics, “ule ni msee wa mayai, muite umwambie agonge mbili…”
- Smocha
On a bad day, a combination of smokie rolled in chapatti should do the trick. These snacks are tasty; they will have you licking your fingers for days. They are addictive like drugs, one will keep on having a bite of Smocha whenever it hits their thought.

- Mahindi choma
Comes a second close to mtura. English for roasted corn, this snack is a staple for Kenyans who are getting off work too. It especially goes well with the chilly and lemon on the side. It will leave your taste buds screaming, like top-shelf liquor.
- Fried Kuku
These are amazing. They consist of a myriad of chicken parts- drumsticks, chicken legs, wings- that have been deep-fried. Such good food.
- Groundnuts
Get into a Kenyan matatu and you will not miss one person munching on these salted snacks. Typically known as ‘njugu Karanga’, groundnuts are among our favorites.
