As we are celebrating the founding fathers of this nation for their great contribution to our independence today, let’s not forget to celebrate unsung heroes.
Mashujaa Day is a very important day for Kenyans. Previously known as Kenyatta day, it is an auspicious day for us because we celebrate all our heroes and fallen soldiers who worked hard to get us to live in an independent and democratic country.
So we go all out, celebrating with pomp and colour as we should. However, it is relevant that we point out some of our own that we need to celebrate because they play very crucial roles in our lives in one way or another.
Here are five unsung heroes that deserve to be celebrated today.

- Garbage collectors.
Sometimes we just assume these people because they are just that. Garbage collectors. However, these people are at the centre of keeping our homes and environment clean. If it were not for them, we would barely be in conducive environments to live and work in so Kongole our sanitation team. You are our Shujaas.
- Mama Mbogas.
If there are people who deserve this acknowledgement big time, it is Mama Mbogas for sure. They have always made it a priority to take care of us in the only way they know how. I can imagine us getting off from work and there is no one to kata that sukuma siki or sell you nyanyas for supper. We celebrate you, amazing men and women.

- Teachers.
I know, the good book says that they will be the most harshly judged. Be that as it may, we do not give these men and women enough credit. They are the ones who are with our children for almost ¾ of their lives, instilling knowledge and virtue to make them better citizens. You know that is no child’s play (no pun intended) because your children are a handful. So let us raise our glasses and toast to our teachers.
- Security guards.
I am 90% sure that most of us would not even dare stay up at unruly hours just because we are on the lookout. However, these guys have dedicated their lives and careers towards this service and for that, we celebrate you today. Continue to keep the peace and safety of this society. Without you, we would not be.

- Single parents.
It may seem so obvious that they are appreciated but it is not enough. So many men and women out here have been forced to step out of their relationships and play mom and dad to their kids all by themselves. Today, we celebrate all single parents in this country. We are proud that you took up the job of parenting and are nailing it. We acknowledge the pain and struggles you experience when you parent all by yourselves and we want you to know that society is right behind you. Kongole, our shujaas.
