Every year, on July 7, the creation of chocolate is honoured with a holiday called World Chocolate Day. People indulge in their favorite treat, guilt-free on this particular day.

The day also honours all kinds of confections derived from chocolate, such as chocolate milk, hot chocolate, candy bars, cake, brownies, and all things chocolatey.

The intriguing history of chocolate

Theobroma cacao is an alien tree that has been domesticated for almost 3,000 years in Central America, Northern South America, and Mexico. Its seeds are what make chocolate.

It was first grown around 4000 years ago in Mesoamerica (today’s Mexico), where it was used by The Olmec, one of Latin America’s oldest civilizations.

They are said to have been the first to make a bitter chocolate drink from the cocoa plant and utilized it in ceremonies and as medicine. Europeans first started to learn about chocolate in the 18th century, even though people have been enjoying it for ages.

Mesoamericans consumed chocolate for the first time on record around 1500. It’s thought that eating chocolate served as a method to represent fidelity to one’s spouse.

Despite chocolate being a native of South and Central America, Africa now produces 70% of the world’s cocoa.

Chocolate used to be associated with the monarchy and it wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution, when mass production drove down the cost of the dessert, that it was made more affordable to the general public.

To manufacture one pound of chocolate, about 400 cacao beans are required.

Milk chocolate took nine years to master the recipe.

Every Valentine’s Day, almost 36 million boxes of chocolates in the shape of hearts are sold.
