Kenya bags more gold at All Africa University Games

Mt. Kenya University’s Boniface Kilonzo won gold in the javelin at the
ongoing 10th All Africa University Games at Kenyatta University on
Thursday. 

 

            Kilonzo
is proclaimed Javelin king, and Wanza takes home another gold medal

 

 The reigning regional
champion threw 62.99 meters, with Kisii University’s Justus Kipkenda coming in
second with 52.36 meters. Nnamdi Azikiwe of Nigeria won the bronze medal with a
time of 51.36 meters. 

 

“It was an easy win for me.
I didn’t feel any pressure in the contest,” said the 24-year-old Kilonzo at Moi
Stadium in Kasarani. 

 

“It shows that the future
is very bright for me. I feel I have amazing energy and I am keen to emulate
former world champion Julius Yego.”

 

Kilonzo expressed his
delight after earning gold in the javelin and taking bronze in the discus, “I
will be looking forward to participating in the national trials where I would
like to join the Commonwealth Games team,” he said. 

 

 Kenyatta University’s Diana Wanza celebrates
after winning the women’s 10,000 meters final.

 

Diana Wanza of Kenyatta
University added to her 5,000m title on Wednesday by winning gold in the
women’s 10,000m with a time of 35:15:21. 

 

Tsholofelo Zwane of Tshwane
University of Technology (South Africa) finished third in 39:01:93, while Sarah
Koomsen of Ghana University of Education Winneba places second in
38:47:70. 

 

“I decided to lead from gun
to tape to ward off any strong opposition in the race,” she said.

 

“Currently, my form is
amazing. I feel I can even do better if I get the chance to represent Kenya
internationally.”

 

In the men’s 1,500m,
Charles Baah of the University of Education Winneba won gold in 4:01:60.
Lemerian Gideon of Dedan Kimathi University grabbed silver in 4:01:87, while
Aziz Mohammed of the University of Ghana took bronze in 4:02:44. 

 

Teneneb Nega of Ethiopia’s
Addis Ababa University won gold in the women’s 1,500m with a time of 4:27:94.
She beat Tshwane University of Technology’s Siminay Weitsz (4:27.94) and Welm
Nkuna from the University of Johannesburg (4:32.35) to second and third places
respectively.

 

Makerere University of
Business Studies (MUBS) defeated the University of Development of Ghana 3-0 to
advance to the finals in men’s football. The winner of the match between
Kenyatta University and Makerere University will compete for gold. 

 

The University of
Johannesburg advanced to the final of men’s basketball after defeating American
University Cairo 68-44. Frida Yagomba scored 24 points to lead the USIU Flames
to a 52-38 victory over the Makerere University of Uganda. Thelma Toskin scored
15 points for the losers. 

 

In men’s basketball, Misr
University of Egypt defeated compatriots American University of Cairo 64-62 in
a close battle. 

 

After defeating the United
States International University (USIU) Tigers 69-55, Kenyatta University
Pirates advanced to the men’s basketball finals. On Friday, they will compete
for the gold medal against the University of Johannesburg.
