Canadian pop musician, Justin Bieber has been afflicted with a virus that has left half of his face paralyzed, forcing him to cancel several upcoming shows in order to focus on his healing.

Bieber revealed that he has Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which impacted nerves in his ear and face, in an Instagram video. “I can’t smile on this side of my face,” he said, noting that his right eye was not blinking. “This nostril is immovable. So this side of my face is completely paralyzed.”

Bieber, 28, claimed he was unable to perform at his future gigs due to his physical condition, but said he was performing face exercises and anticipated to heal.

“I’m gonna get better we don’t know how much time it’s gonna be, but it’s gonna be OK. And I have hope, and I trust God, and I trust that this is all for a reason; not sure what that is right now, but in the meantime, I’m gonna rest. I love you guys.”

“It will return to normal. It’s only a matter of time, and we don’t know how much time there is.” Bieber said.

With songs like “Baby” and “Believe,” Bieber rose to stardom as a 13-year-old and went on to become a global musical superstar. He has two Grammy victories to go along with 22 nominations, including nominations for record and song of the year for “Peaches” this year.

Bieber revealed in 2020, that he had been diagnosed with Lyme illness and “a terrible case of chronic mono.” Hailey Bieber, the singer’s wife, defended him from internet bullies who didn’t believe his diagnosis was real.

“For those who are trying to downplay the severity of Lyme disease. Please do your research and listen to the stories of people who have suffered with it for years,” Hailey tweeted.

“Making fun of and belittling a disease you don’t understand is never the way, all it takes is educating yourself.”

RHS is a side effect of the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes shingles and chickenpox, according to the Mayo Clinic. Rashes around the face, hearing loss, and one-sided facial paralysis are all symptoms.

Though RHS might result in lasting nerve injury, complete recovery usually takes three weeks. Adults over the age of 60 are most commonly affected, whereas children are rarely affected.
