Winfred Yavi had already won two gold medals at the 2026 Asian Games when she lined up for her final race in Nagoya.

The Kenyan-born runner still had one more task.

She completed it in style, winning the women’s 5,000m in 15:10.18 and securing an unprecedented three-event distance sweep at a single Asian Games. Yavi had earlier won the 10,000m in 32:39.18 and the 3,000m steeplechase in a Games-record 9:04.36.

Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka pushed her to the finish in the 5,000m. Tanaka took silver in 15:11.65, just 1.47 seconds behind Yavi.

The victory capped one of the most demanding weeks of Yavi’s career.

Three races, three gold medals

Yavi began her Asian Games campaign with the 10,000m on September 24.

She stayed patient before making her decisive move late in the race. Her winning time of 32:39.18 put her ahead of Tanaka, who finished second.

Three days later, Yavi returned for the 3,000m steeplechase.

She controlled the race and crossed the line in 9:04.36, setting a new Asian Games record. Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto finished second in 9:06.82, while India’s Parul Chaudhary took bronze in 9:08.67.

Then came the 5,000m.

Tanaka again stayed close, but Yavi held her nerve to win the race and complete the treble. World Athletics described the achievement as a remarkable distance treble.

A Kenyan-born athlete running for Bahrain

Yavi was born in Kenya on December 31, 1999, and comes from Ukia in Makueni County.

She switched her allegiance to Bahrain as a teenager and became eligible to compete for the Gulf nation in 2016. World Athletics records the transfer of allegiance from Kenya to Bahrain in August that year.

Yavi has previously explained that the depth of competition in Kenya made it difficult for her to secure a place on the national team.

“I didn’t get the chance to represent Kenya,” she said in an interview reported in 2024, explaining that she had repeatedly gone through trials without securing one of the available places.

Her decision opened a new chapter.

She soon established herself as one of Bahrain’s leading athletes and became a regular presence on the international circuit.

From Makueni to Olympic glory

Yavi’s rise has extended well beyond the Asian Games.

She won the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, establishing herself as a world champion.

A year later, she won Olympic gold in Paris. Her time of 8:52.76 set an Olympic record. World Athletics lists her as both an Olympic and world champion.

Her 2026 Asian Games campaign has now added three more gold medals to that record.

The 5,000m victory was particularly significant because it completed a sweep across three very different distance events, the 5,000m, 10,000m and steeplechase.

A week to remember in Nagoya

The three victories also showed Yavi’s range.

The 10,000m demanded patience and endurance. The steeplechase required the added challenge of barriers and water jumps. The 5,000m brought another tactical battle against Tanaka.

Yet Yavi managed to win all three.

She finished the Asian Games as one of Bahrain’s most successful athletes in Nagoya and added another chapter to a career that began in Kenya before taking her to the top of the international stage.

For a runner born in Makueni, the journey from Kenyan trials to Olympic champion and now Asian Games history has been remarkable.
