President Donald Trump is set to meet Anthropic chief Dario Amodei. The two are due to have a private dinner. It is expected at the White House.
The meeting comes after months of tension. The dispute has centred on AI safety and military use.
A Rare Meeting
The dinner was confirmed by Trump. Speaking to reporters, he said the meeting would take place late Sunday.
“And tonight, I’m having dinner with the head of Anthropic,” Trump said.
He later referred to Amodei as a highly respected figure at Anthropic. The meeting was reported to be the first one-on-one encounter between Trump and Amodei.
It comes as the White House has increased its focus on artificial intelligence.
Dispute Over AI Use
The relationship has been strained. Anthropic has opposed two specific uses of its models. One involves fully autonomous weapons.
The other concerns mass domestic surveillance.
Anthropic has said its position does not block lawful national security uses. The company has instead called for safeguards around those two areas.
The dispute led to action by the US defence establishment. Anthropic was designated a national security supply-chain risk. The company challenged that decision in court.
Court Fight Continues
The legal dispute has since shifted.
A US appeals court upheld the Pentagon’s designation on September 25, according to Reuters. The ruling extended the standoff between Anthropic and the administration.
Anthropic has continued to defend its safeguards.
The company has also continued to publish research on AI risks. Its latest reports have examined misuse involving surveillance, cyber operations and weapons development.
Wider AI Debate
The dinner comes during a broader debate in Washington. Trump has argued that US AI firms must keep developing rapidly. He has also cited competition with China.
Amodei and other technology leaders have raised concerns about risks from increasingly capable systems. The two sides have therefore differed on how safety should be balanced with rapid development.
Yet the dinner signals direct contact. The meeting is taking place despite the unresolved dispute. Trump is also expected to meet other AI executives this week.
The talks are likely to keep AI policy and national security high on the White House agenda.
