The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is preparing to mark his first death anniversary.
A broad programme is being planned. It is expected to bring together his supporters, friends and political allies from across Kenya.
A Moment For The People
Raila died on October 15, 2025, in Kochi, India. He was receiving treatment for an undisclosed condition. A committee has since been formed. It is being led by Prof. Adams Oloo. The team will coordinate the anniversary events.
The family said the occasion would allow Kenyans to mourn. It would also offer a chance to celebrate Raila’s life and public service.
Family Seeks Patience
The announcement was made through the Raila Odinga Secretariat. It was acknowledged that many supporters had not been able to say goodbye after his death. Some had also been denied the chance to mourn in the way they wanted.
The anniversary is now being presented as a second opportunity.
“Many did not get the chance to say goodbye,” the Secretariat said.
The event, it added, would give Raila’s people a chance to remember, mourn, celebrate and honour him.
All Communities Invited
The family said no group would be left out.
Supporters from different communities and generations are expected to be included. Those who shared different chapters of Raila’s life will also be welcomed.
“There will be room for those who walked with him,” the statement said.
People wishing to organise or support activities have been asked to contact the committee. The move is meant to ensure that events are properly coordinated.
The full programme will be announced later. The family has asked the public to remain patient as preparations continue.
A Lasting Political Legacy
Raila was one of Kenya’s most influential political figures. His career was shaped by years of opposition politics and reform campaigns.
He entered Parliament in 1992. He later ran for president in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2022. Victory was claimed in the last four contests. However, the results were not recognised in his favour.
His early political years were marked by detention and exile. Those experiences came during the rule of former President Daniel arap Moi.
Raila later became a central figure in Kenya’s democratic struggle. His influence was felt across several political generations.
Final Years In Government
At the time of his death, Raila was part of the broad-based government.
The arrangement had brought him into cooperation with President William Ruto. It was presented as a partnership aimed at improving leadership and service delivery.
